The Story of Meum Winery

The History Of Our Vineyards

From the French Monks …

Our vineyards are located on the hills above Žiče Charterhouse (Žička kartuzija) that was started by 12 monks from Grenoble (Southern France).

Monastery was founded around 1160 A.D. and is one of the oldest in Europe and the first outside France or Italy.

From what we know Charterhouse was also producing and selling wine and we believe that monks were the ones to plant two of the most important varieties from France, namely Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Every year we are discovering more proof that those two varieties really strive in our vineyards.

Our location is something special, our terroir is really unique and we get even more proof about that in chalenging vintages when Pinot Noir and Chardonnay survive and give us great and healthy grapes.

To Today!

Another important piece of the history is also a part of the old press that we have found. It dates to 1888 which means that the wine making was very much alive here also around 140 years ago. Having your own wine press at that time ment that you were producing quite a lot of wine.

Jurij took over the estate in 2006 after his father passed away and he started to make some renovations in the vineyards, he also expanded vineyards and started to focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as two flagship varieties from Meum Winery.

Today we are cultivating around 6 ha of vineyards and we produce around 20.000 bottles of high quality wines.

Establishing Meum Winery

The new chapter started with our new brand in 2016.
It was a birth of Meum Winery.

We decided we want to heavily focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay although from historical reasons we still have some other varieties that are typical for our Štajerska wine district.

This means we also have some vineyards of Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling and Pinot Grigio from the times when Jurij’s father planted them and so we will always keep them also as a memory on those times.

LOCATION

Meum Winery is located in Eastern part of Slovenia in Podravje wine region (district: Štajerska)

CLIMATE

We have moderate continental climate which is great for preserving fruitiness in our wines as we have colder nights also in summer.

SOIL

in Meum Vineyards is typically Marlstone which contains clay and calcium carbonate.
Great for minerality and acidity in wines.

GRAPE VARIETIES

We focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay but we also grow some Syrah, Blaufrankisch, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Pinot Grigio and Traminer.

VINEYARDS

of Meum Winery are located quite high above the sea level (400 – 450m) and are mostly concentrated around the old cellar in Klokočovnik.

CELLAR

Our cellar is currently still an old cellar which is becoming too small for us. We are having some plans to build a new cellar in the future.
